Back to School Night: Worth it?

Back to School Night at most schools occur in the first two weeks of school, but at Davis High, Back to School Night is on Sept. 27.

The Back to School Night program allows parents and teachers to meet and teachers share how the class works, which allows parents to help their students do well in that class.

“My parents find Back to School Night really useful because they can learn all my classes and what my teachers are like,” sophomore Joaquin Manzanilla said. Sometimes his parents learn information about the class that he didn’t pick up himself. Manzanilla said that this is one of the reasons he normally has a good start to school.

Sophomore Charlie Harris agreed with Manzanilla to an extent. “It allows the teachers to interact with the parents.” However, Harris also said that if Back to School Night was cut, it wouldn’t be such a big deal. Harris feels that no matter when Back to School Night is, it doesn’t matter at all.

Sophomore Kyle Clancy disagrees. “Back to School Night would be a huge impact if it didn’t exist anymore. It allows parents to learn what your classes are like and can understand why you might be doing bad in that class,” he said.

“It’s stupid and boring and unnecessary,” Nate Harper said. His parents don’t find it very useful either when all the information you receive at Back to School Night comes from class syllabi at the beginning of the year. However, his parents still attend all Back to School Nights. The fact that Back to School Night starts later at Davis High doesn’t bother his family at all.

Riley Swift agreed with Harper. “My parents think that it’s a waste of time and sometimes they don’t even go to Back to School Night.” However, the only time his parents didn’t attend was when Swift had a black belt test that his parents wanted to watch.
