The Davis High varsity men’s soccer team faced off with Napa Valley in their first section game on Oct. 30.

“It was awesome because we won 6-0 and kept a clean sheet, and we really finished the game out,” junior Rami Rashmawi said.

In the first half, sophomore DJ Villegas scored right off the bat, quickly followed by another goal made by senior Kian Bagheri.

Early in the second half, a penalty kick was awarded to the Napa Valley team, which was successfully blocked by the Davis High goalkeeper.

“There were a couple defensive mistakes that led to the penalty,” Rashmawi said, “but all in all what happened was we didn’t let the ball go in, and that’s all that matters.”

The Blue Devils followed up with a goal by senior Collin Holtz, then two more attempts made by senior Cameron Cuvelier and junior Brian Birt.

The team blocked successive attempts by Napa Valley to score, then followed up with a goal by senior Antonio Mares. The Blue Devils finished off strong with two more goals by junior Ajay Klein and senior Lee Leverrier.

The Blue Devils were able to showcase their impressive defense against Napa Valley throughout the game, with juniors Alexander Nelson and Rami Rashmawi consistently redirecting the offensive approaches.

In preparation for section playoffs, the team gave each other buzz cuts over the weekend.

“I think we’re at the right moment right now, everybody’s getting along. We’re gelling, we’re playing well together,” coach Alex Park said. “I’m pretty confident going into the next playoff game, which is Thursday [Nov. 1].”

Rashmawi is also optimistic about how the team will fare in the remainder of the section playoff games.

“I think we’re going to do really awesome. We’re going to win all the way, go to the finals, and beat everyone we play and destroy them,” Rashmawi said. “That’s our plan, and that’s what we’re going to do.”
