Despite questionable calls by the referees, and a sixteen-point deficit in the third quarter, the Blue Devil Varsity basketball team did what the 49’ers could not: they made a comeback and won.

The night began by honoring the graduating seniors Tommy Slabaugh, James Kilkenny, Hayden Duer, Adam King, Daniel Bonetti, Hayden Russel, Grant Dickerson, Mikie Schlosser, and Kevin Sorenson. Following the ceremony, senior Tommy Slabaugh sang the national anthem.

Monterey trail quickly opened the first quarter with a few points, but those points were earned back when King scored the first three-pointer for DHS.

After back and forth scoring in the first quarter, slight trouble for the Blue Devils to get the ball through the net as the period closed left DHS trailing behind by four points.

The second quarter was the calm before the storm. It ended 32-30 after Monterey Trail took the lead with a last-second buzzer shot.

Monterey Trail took over in the third quarter. Point after point, and turn-over after turn-over, Davis High could not get the ball through the hoop.

Davis fell behind 30-46, but Monterey Trail’s momentum was slowed when junior Brandon Strong and Sorenson, the nights leading scorers, brought the devils back up to 35 points.

Several penalties called against the Blue Devils in the third quarter had the crowed echoing with “Booos” and “You have got to be kidding us!”

Junior Matt Michlz scored a three, followed by a shot by Sorenson, which was not counted because of a person foul.

The referee calls against Davis High continued during the fourth quarter, allowing Monterey Trail to continue to widen the score gap with numerous free throws, bringing the score to 49-61.

Shots by Russell, who scored 15 points last night, and Ben Crook helped to bring Davis’ score up to 59.

Then, Sorenson had another personal foul called against him, his fifth of the night, and the crowd went wild in disbelief. Everyone in the stands rose to their feet and the gym was filled with a deep, resonating booing.

Davis High coach Dan Gonzales and Monterey Trail coach Ken Manfredi were both heated as they began to walk towards each other. Getting too close for comfort, the referees and Davis High Athletic Director Dennis Foster had to pull the coaches back.

After a short break, game play began again and Davis made ground with free throw points, bringing the score to a suspenseful 63-65, with less than a minute left.

With twelve seconds left on the clock, Strong made a shot and tied the game.

Then, a mere three seconds glowed on the scoreboard when Michaels batted the winning one in.

The crowd instantly stormed the court, parents cheered, and now Blue Devil basketball is on their way to the playoffs.
