Tiaras and dresses were welcomed by Davis High with Princess Day, turning students into royalty for the day on Feb. 15.

The event was founded four years ago at Holmes Jr. High by sophomore twins Marianne and Tina Simpson, after friend Claire Wiebe, also a sophomore, suggested dressing up as princesses to celebrate the twins’ birthday.

“So that first year we all wore tiaras and dresses, and it grew surprisingly fast,” Tina said. “Last year, we had a ton of people participate, including our principal [Derek Brothers at Holmes].”

When the twins became sophomores at Davis High, they decided to bring the tradition with them. “We hope that by senior year, we can make it an unofficial tradition,” Tina said. “I say unofficial because one of the things that makes Princess Day so fun is…because it’s nice having a day that can be for everyone.”

“There’s normally a big feast out on the quad, it’s a lot of fun,” said sophomore Sydney Maguire, who has been a Princess Day participant since junior high. “Guys get into it, they wear tiaras.”

“It’s the unofficial spirit day and we’re hoping to make it bigger and better each year,” Maguire said.

Wiebe and the Simpsons also created a Facebook event to invite as many people as possible to participate. According to Tina, about 50 people RSVP’ed, “which is a pretty good turnout considering it’s our first year at DHS.”

“It seems kind of cheesy, but it’s definitely one of my favorite days of the year,” Tina said.
