The DHS varsity men’s lacrosse team started off the season strong Friday night with a win against the Matadors. The blue devils showed no mercy with a 13-2 victory.

“It’s how we wanted to start it. We wanted to come out here with a win,” coach Nick Juri said. “We looked at last season, we were worried if our talent would be enough to get us through. But tonight these guys showed us that they were willing to put up the work.”

Senior Mikie Schlosser started the game out hot with the first goal of the night. Schlosser juked his defender with a fake shot, then juked the Matador again with a spin move only to whip the ball in the top-right corner with a leftie shot.

Schlosser and the rest of the blue devil offense kept the Matadors on their feet as they kept possession of the ball throughout most of the game.

The Matadors did not even see the back of the net until DHS had a four point lead. Senior Kevin Klenzendorf made the second goal off of crease roll and junior Kian Reno added to Klenzendorf and Schlosser’s goal with an impressive shot made after a speedy ground ball pick up.

Junior Mark Bruemmer made the final goal before the Matadors added a point to the score board.

After a goal by junior Willie Hawkins, the score board read 5-2 at halftime.

Fans cheered as the blue devils held up their own during the last half of the game.

Senior goalkeeper Will McPherson impressively kept a shutout throughout the rest of the game, leaving the Matadors with only two goals compared to the 13 that the blue devils would end the game with.

Schlosser juked left and moved right, confusing one of his defenders and causing him to comically fall to the ground. Schlosser smoothly threw the ball to a very open Hawkins who easily placed the ball in the back of the net with a reassuring swoosh.

Offense gave the Matadors a run for their money. In the second half, shots were firing from all directions. Hawkins put in three in the last half, juniors Daniel Rowen and Ryan Amesbury both got in two and Schlosser added one.
