The LEAD class empowered girls to feel comfortable and confident in their own skin for the first Break Down the Foundation event on May 10, 2013.

Pink invitations were delivered to all girls during third period the day before, encouraging students to walk the halls of Davis High School without makeup, perfect hair or a polished outfit.

“We’re hoping it will show girls that they don’t have to be up to date with the latest trends or the latest fashions,” event organizer Holly Belcourt said. “Their beauty comes from their inner self.”

Belcourt and fellow senior Debra DeWit, the brains behind the event, wanted to put their own spin on Break Down the Foundation Day so that it wasn’t just an event on Facebook.

The invitations offered girls a chance to take photos in the South Gym during lunch to be posted on Facebook or made into a poster, showing off their natural beauty.

“We wanted to make it something tangible and something everyone could participate in,” DeWit said. The senior said that the idea for the no-makeup day came from a friend who noticed girls with insecurities at DHS.

DeWit hopes not only to crumble cakey foundation, but also to break down the barriers between students. “I think it’s really important in a school setting that we support each other, not tear each other down,” she said.

Although the event was geared towards the female population of DHS, the two seniors hope that the LEAD class will organize a more guy-friendly event next year.

“I guess we’ll try to plan an event for guys to come and have fun, and be goofy too!” Belcourt said.

Both seniors will graduate in hopes that it will continue next year and become a tradition.
