While Davis High seniors grow excited for the big move to college, many alumni are packing up their dorm rooms and heading home for the summer.

Pam Gunnell is a mother of three, including her UC Berkeley son, Daniel Gunnell and her Davis High junior, Jane Gunnell.

Pam says the first thing her son does when he gets home is relax and eat. Jane agrees.

“The first thing he does is take off his shirt….and eats,” said Jane.

Jane said that when her brother isn’t home, it feels empty.

“He brings life to the house,” said Jane.

Pam said the house is definitely quieter. Without his clothes, shoes and belongings everywhere, the house is simply less active.

“Quieter, no doors opening late at night, fewer dishes in the sink and less full of life,” said Pam.

Daniel recently transferred to UC Berkeley which is much closer that his previous school, UC Santa Barbara. Pam and Jane said he has visited home with more regularity now that home is only an hour and half drive away.

But still, when he does leave again, “[I will] clean up after him, enjoy a day or two of quiet, and start missing him all over again,” Pam said.

Jane feels the same way. When he is home, the two watch movies, play video games and share stories of their endeavors. But when he leaves, Jane will just go back to her life with friends and school until he comes again.
