The bright stadium lights glowed down on the football field during the homecoming game on Oct. 11. By the time the Blue Devils reached a 7-7 tie with opponent Monterey Mustangs, the halftime show was ready to begin.

Although the halftime show was host to the dance and cheerleading teams, most anticipated was the coronation of this year’s homecoming royalty. Three senior boys and three seniors girls were nominated earlier this year for the position of homecoming queen and king.

At the end of the show, the announcers revealed Danielle Gantar and Brendan MacDonald to be this year’s queen and king.

To the surprise of many of the game spectators, Gantar and MacDonald are not actually in a relationship, unlike the other nominees from this year as well as in the past. Many of the other candidates, including Gantar and contender Daniel Rowen, are actual couples.

Along with the crowning of the king and queen also came the winners of the rest of the royal court.

The junior’s pick pronounced Annie Leck as Princess and Nathan Curtis as Prince. Leck was unaccompanied by her counterpart, who is a varsity football player, during the halftime show.

“Tonight was kind of awkward because I had to come out all alone,” Leck said.

Sophomore Jack Beckman was also present with girlfriend Camille Johnson as the homecoming duke and duchess. The JV football player was thrilled.

“I’m really excited, it was a lot of fun,” Johnson said.

The halftime show also highlighted performances by the Blue Devil dance and cheer teams. The cheerleaders commenced the show with an upbeat performance that included several moves in which “flyers” were tossed in the air.

“They seemed very enthusiastic,” Katherine Dimond said.

Adorn with matching bright pink hair bows, the cheer team filled through the stands to pass out t-shirts and beads.

The dance team, dressed in glittery royal blue uniforms, executed their performance with synchronicity. The group of nine girls delivered a short, yet well executed presentation.
