Defeating the Monterey Trail Mustangs was a simple task for the Davis High men’s varsity soccer team, as they ended their last home game of the season with a 5-0 victory at Yudin Field on Tuesday Oct. 29.

Shortly into the game, Ken Hashimoto quickly slotted the first goal, making a good start for the Blue Devils.

After winning its past 4 games, Davis was ready to have another win added onto the streak. Ricky Gonzalez set up Pablo Guarnizo for a point-blank shot, but to their dismay, the ball glided right over the net which ended the first half of the game.

Half time was different than any other game so far this season. Seniors of the varsity team were recognized as they were called up individually and given frames containing photos showing their past years playing together at DHS.

Going into the second half of the game, Raunak Manandhar lobbed a ball in the air which Joe Rainer forcefully headed in the goal. Following, with the goal wide open with no defenders in sight, Paul Hinton added a point for Davis, putting them in a 3-0 lead.

Manandhar went in to make another goal as captain Rami Rashmawi flicked a pass to him, where the ball flew up and slid from the post into the goal.

After 4 goals had already been made, Guarnizo was eager to attempt at making a goal. He swiftly weaved through defending players of Monterey Trail and successfully made the last goal of the game.

After one of their highest scoring games, varsity captain Rashmawi said the team played really well compared to the last game they played (which they only won 1-0), making this 5-0 victory a big improvement.

“I think we have a good team. Accounting how much work and effort we’ve been putting in to improve ourselves, [I think] we will have a good chance in winning [playoffs], but it won’t be easy,” Gonzalez said about upcoming games.

Adding onto their previous games, this game pushed the Devil winning streak to 14.

Varsity coach Alex Park said, “There’s nothing better you can ask for other than a 5-0 win. The only problem we have right now is injuries which is important for future games like playoffs.” Park hopes for everyone on his team to be up and running and healthy in time for their future games where they hope to continue their winning streak.
