The Davis High Blue Devils dueled the Grant High School Pacers in DHS’s last home game of the season on Nov. 1.

Both teams walked onto the field with a record of five wins and three losses, knowing that only one could leave with twice as many victories as defeats.

In the end, Grant emerged with the 6-3 record in a 38-0 triumph over Davis.

Grant finally shattered an early-game stalemate with a rushing touchdown by junior running back Deandre Whittington-Grays. The Pacers gained 50 yards in just four minutes and 22 seconds on the scoring drive.

The Blue Devils came within 30 yards of the end zone on the subsequent drive, but could not make the touchdown. A turnover on downs gave the ball back to the visiting team.

Soon after, Grant’s junior quarterback Donovan Brown hurled a miraculous 55-yard touchdown completion to wide receiver Ariyon Huff and helped put Grant ahead of DHS, 14-0.

The Pacers’ running back Zay Cato scored a third touchdown with only 1:41 left on the clock, ending the second quarter 21-0 in Grant’s favor.

The second half continued to be a period of punishment for the Blue Devils. Whittington-Grays scored again in the third quarter, putting the win further out of reach and making the score 28-0.

Though Grant came close to the end zone again in the third, the coaches decided to play it safe and kick a field goal that set the score to 31-0 for the final quarter.

The Pacers’ junior wide receiver Malik Goss-Pruitt scored the final touchdown of the game in the last quarter, and ended the duel with a 38-0 shutout.

Head coach Marc Hicks blamed the loss on penalties. “Penalties’ll kill you,” Hicks said. “You just can’t win with mistakes.”

Defensive coordinator Ty Brown thought that defensively, DHS played well. “We played as hard as we possibly could. We knew what Grant was gonna do… We got from them what we thought we would.”

Brown was optimistic for the next week’s game against Elk Grove. Despite the Thundering Herd’s 8-1 record, Brown said that “[The team is] ready for Elk Grove.”

The team is scheduled to play at Elk Grove High School on Friday, Nov. 8.
