Most authors who get their pieces moved to the big screen are not very involved with the creation of the movie. Dennis Lehane however, writer of The Drop, actually wrote the script for the movie.

The movie  directed by Michael R. Roskam, is opening shortly after the book hits the shelves.

Starring a disgruntled cousin Marv, played by the late and great James Gandolfini, and his quiet cousin Bob (Tom Hardy), who is a source of confusion in the opening act.

Marv is the manager at a bar which is owned by the mob and is used infrequently to stash their money. Bob the bartender starts as an uninteresting main character woefully out of place trying do good in mob run Brooklyn.

Marv and Detective Torres (John Ortiz) make the awkward Bob bearable with plenty of witty dialogue.

Things start to pick up during latter part of the film, and once the mob comes into play everything snowballs from there. As the movie progresses a conspiracy develops and the movie resolves the issue of the quiet and demure Bob.

The best thing is that it doesn’t feel like a huge exposition dump, instead it feels natural.

Even the romance between Bob and Nadia (Noomi Repace) doesn’t feel forced and is believably written into the narrative. If nothing else the action packed ending makes this movie one to see.

The Drop, rated R, opens Friday September 12.
