Some teachers are very excited about adorning their doors with creative decorations while others decide against it because they do not have a fourth period or they do not have enough time.

Social studies teacher Rachel Doller is crossing her fingers for a win this year.

“I want to win this year because I’m a new teacher and it would be awesome going to a staff meeting and being able to brag about my class,” Doller said.

She has learned from last year that door decorating during class is necessary to actively participate. Her seniors were not very involved and the door decorating was rushed.

This year she is allotting time in class to decorate her door and she thinks it is a good way for her sophomore class to get involved.

“I want to be part of the school…and feel connected with my students,” Doller said, “It’s a good way to get jazzed for homecoming.”

However, some teachers are not decorating their doors at all this year. Social studies teacher Kevin Williams and last year’s winner teacher Fern O’Brien are two of many teachers that do not have the option of participating because they do not have a fourth period class.

Williams explained that door decorating throws off his class preparations when he does participate.

“What do I do for the other classes in the time fourth period used to decorate my door?” Williams said.

O’Brien is a little disappointed about not being able to participate in the activity this year because last year was fun and exciting.

“It was the first time ever one of my classes had even been close in the running,” O’Brien said. Her class received a trophy for its efforts.

“I don’t have to defend my title,” O’Brien said.

U.S. Government and Politics teacher Peter Reilly has decided not to decorate his door even though he has a fourth period. The shortened semester leads to three weeks less instructional time, and AP Gov. is only a semester-long class for seniors.

“I’m pressed for time,” Reilly said, “Losing class time in a year-long class is not a big deal but one day in a semester-long class will make a difference.”

Also, Reilly’s senior students were also not very excited to decorate his door.

Student Government teacher Eric Morgan is an exception. His class is organizing Homecoming events, including door decorating. Because they will be judging all the decorated doors on Sept. 24, they cannot be a part of the competition, but is decorating their door anyways to show school spirit.
