All the hype about the so-called “storm” came to an end today, as Davis High students were let down when they weren’t blown away by gusting winds or buffeted by torrential rains.

“Honestly I thought it was disappointing. Right now it seems to me it is just like a regular rainy day,” sophomore Nate Burmas said.

In preparing for a full-on lunch scramble, the south gym was opened so students could stay dry. But not too many chose to eat there, and neither the library nor the academic center experienced unusual crowds.

For those who had to be outside, the “storm” was still rough, however. Sophomore Sammie Griffiths biked home from school after 5th period.

“I’m going to get drenched by this rain. It sucks,” Griffiths said.

Campus supervisor Michael Taesali prepared for the expected deluge by wearing warm clothes: pants, gloves and a jacket with a hood, and also carried an umbrella.

For those who don’t stay for 7th period, the parking lots after 5th period were swarming.

“It was the worst; it took 20 minutes to get out,” sophomore Kate Miller said.

Junior Zack Harvey described the “storm game” as “weak.” He, among others, won’t be worrying the next time a storm warning is announced.

I’m a 2012 DHS alumni that went to school out in New Jersey.
While the circumstances may be slightly different given Davis’ location and weather versus the Tri State area, I would caution against discounting all future storm warnings based on this one. That is the same mentality that left our region so unprepared for Sandy in 2012 after Hurricane Irene in 2011.
