Jesuit High School hosted the 2015 Sac State Track Classic at the Hornet Stadium on Saturday, March 7. This was the first official meet of the season, but because it was an invitational, not all members of the track and field team were invited to compete.

Davis High athletes participated in a multitude of events, including the 4×200 meter relay, a new event that was added to the meet schedule this year. Sophomores Tessa Malone (who took fourth in the triple jump) and Abby McIntyre, along with juniors Elizabeth Salomon and  Angelica Schiesari, took fourth overall in the race. Sophomore Ben Easton, junior Juan Pablo Almanza-Soto and seniors Adam Buderi and Alec Farboud placed eighth overall in the men’s race.

Strong performances by the Blue Devils included a 62.78 second 400-meter dash by senior Emily Lufburrow, a personal record, and senior Ben Salcedo’s third place finish overall in the 400-meter race with a time of 49.94 seconds.

Junior Willie Hall and senior Blake Croft took second and fourth overall in the 800-meter respectively, and senior Jeanne-Marie McPherson took third for the women. Other strong distance times came from sophomores Michael Vernau, Sofia Castiglioni and Abbey Fisk, and seniors Maggie McManis and Charlie Harris.

Senior Kyle Clancy ran the 110-meter hurdles and took first in his heat and second overall with a time of 15.21 seconds. Clancy says that his favorite thing about the annual me is that “it is a great time to shake off some cobwebs” before Delta League meets start.

Clancy hopes to continue training in the hurdles, high jump and the long and triple jumps. His larger vision for the season is the state meet, where he believes the varsity team to have a “great shot at a team title.”

Sophomore Arielle Fletter participated in the triple jump, and said that “the meet was really fun because it was so big, and I got to compete with a lot of other schools on a college track.”

It was Fletter’s first time competing at this meet, and she looks forward to “[seeing] my improvement from last year, as well as beginning the 2015 track season!”

Davis will host a league meet next Wednesday at Halden Field against Grant and Pleasant Grove.
