The Davis High men’s JV volleyball team won in two sets against the Our Lady of Guadalupe High School Wolves on April 23, but they needed two big comebacks to do so.

After missing three serves in the beginning of the first set, the Blue Devils 7-3 found themselves down 6-10. Davis sophomore setter Manuel Costa said that while the team had trouble serving early, they eventually settled down.

“In the beginning of the game we didn’t talk well and missed a lot of serves […] but then we had a timeout and we were able to calm down and focus on making our serves,” Costa said.

Down 6-10, freshman Francisco Di Giuseppe went on a seven point service run, giving the Blue Devils a 13-11 lead, and the momentum in the set.

Costa and sophomore Nathan Kong both played some setter for the Blue Devils in the first set, and did an excellent job of setting up the Davis outside hitters, allowing a multitude of players to record kills.

After their shaky start, the Blue Devils would go on to win the first set, 25-16.

In the second set the Blue Devils started slow once again, and found themselves in a familiar hole, down 5-0. However, four missed serves by Our Lady of Guadalupe allowed Davis to play evenly with the Wolves until the score was set at 7-12.

In need of another momentum swing, the Blue Devils were aided yet again by a big service run, this time an eight point boost coming from Costa. Now up 15-13, Davis strapped down and began to play stifling defense. Di Giuseppe led the charge, recording 9 digs in the second set alone.

Davis would eventually expand their lead, thanks in part to great serving by Alex Sprague, who recorded an ace before giving the Blue Devils the 25-22 victory in the decisive second set.

Anthony Field also had a stellar performance for Blue Devils in the second set, putting down three kills in pivotal points.

Sophomore back row player Max Sprague said the Blue Devils depth was what allowed them to make the big comebacks they needed.

“Having enough depth and guys on the roster so the starters could come off and get focussed for the next point really helped us make runs in both games,” Sprague said.

The Blue Devil’s next game is on May 5 against the Grant Pacers, a team they beat in their last meeting.
