Walking through the quad at lunch on Wednesday, May 20 proved more difficult than usual, as it was cluttered with the entries in the Davis High Car Show, put on by the Car Club. There was a Dodge Challenger, a Mercedes Benz C250, an old 1964 Lincoln Continental, and even Mr. Wagner’s 1930 Ford Model “A” with its flashy rainbow paint job.

Contestants in the Car Show included teachers, graduates and students alike, who submitted a wide range of cars for a chance to win a $25 gift card to O’Reilly’s Auto Parts. They were judged by students walking through the quad. There were five categories each contestant could win: best import, best domestic, best overall, best classic car, and best truck.

Senior Zain Aljabiry entered in the contest this year for the first time with his 1987 Nissan 300ZX, and has a practical incentive to win the gift card prize.

“I have just always liked my car,” Aljabiry said. “So I just wanted everyone to see if even if I don’t win. But last year, over the summer, I left a can of paint on the inside, and it exploded all over the back, so [if I win the gift card] I would probably get some cleaning products to clean it all out.”

Junior Cameron Parkhurst, the treasurer of the Car Club, was glad to see the event in full swing.

“This is the main part of the year for Car Club, our main show,” Parkhurst said. “We have other smaller events, but that is mostly for the club, so this is the main public one. This is just a fun [event] for people to bring out their cars.”

Towards the end of the lunch period, contestants got a chance to show off the loudness of their engines and stereos, which proved to draw the biggest crowd of spectators. There were impressive engine revs by Davis High Graduate Amar Singh in his 1991 Nissan 300ZX, as well as from sophomore Kyle Schutte in his orange 1959 Volkswagen Bug. As far as the sound systems went, it was never officially announced who had the loudest stereo, but it seemed that Schutte had the most powerful system, despite the fact that he had what might have been the smallest car in the show.

This story will be updated when the winners are announced.
