The Davis High School men’s varsity soccer team tied Rocklin High School 1-1 on Monday, Aug. 31, with both teams playing a defensive-minded game.

After a scoreless first 45 minutes, the Thunder took the lead early on in the second half with a shot from midfield.

“A lot of the boys said we came out nervous,” head coach Alex Park explained. But DHS quickly responded and Matthew Rowen tied up the score with a header off a corner kick, preventing a loss.

“We all know how to play very well as a team, just sometimes we play down to the level of the opposing team. That’s something we need to work on,” junior Alex Hill said.

At first, it appeared DHS had scored a game-deciding goal late in the match, but it was eventually disallowed due to an offside penalty.

With only a few returning varsity players from last year’s team, Park is still working on the starting lineup, and all players are getting a chance to participate and showcase their abilities.

According to Park, the preseason continues to focus on improving consistency and increase confidence.

“A lot of the boys are starting at a new school and the adjustment with the added practice can be exhausting” Park said.
