The Davis High men’s water polo team won their season opener against Gunn High School on Friday, Sept. 4, with a final score of 11-5.

The Devils opened up the scoring with four unanswered goals, two by junior Cameron Wright, giving DHS a 4-0 lead through the middle of the second quarter.

But Gunn stormed back with a run of their own, scoring four goals in the same period, and left Davis clinging to a 5-4 lead at the end of the half.

“We kinda got off the rails defensively in the second quarter. We gave up four goals in the second quarter; we simply can not give up that many goals period,” head coach Tracy Stapleton explained.

The Titans quickly knotted the game at five after scoring in the first 30 seconds of the half. But the Devils cracked down on defense and, after junior Daniel Alvarez’s second goal of the contest, took a lead that they would not relinquish.

“We regrouped at halftime and shut them out after the first 30 seconds,” Wright said .

After regaining the lead, Davis continued to pull away. On the back of sophomore Jake Taylor’s two goals, the Blue Devils had a three-point margin going into the final period. The team added three more goals to put the game out of reach and seal the victory.
