Winter tryouts for the Davis High dance team concluded on Saturday, Nov. 7, and four of the ten applicants were accepted: sophomore Hellen Wen, junior Skyler Mikalson and seniors Emma Travis and Katurah Johansson.

The judges, who said they were looking for stage presence, ability and personality, were senior members of the team Kacey Hsu, Sally Li and Joey Tan and dance coach Kimberly Perez.

Wen has had experience in Chinese dance, ballet, hip hop, lyrical, jazz and tap. She first became interested in the team when she saw the their performance at the Homecoming rally.

Wanting to be a part of the performances as well, Wen attended the tryout and was excited to hear the news that she had made it. “It’s like a feedback of my hard work in dance,” she said.

Mikalson is also familiar with many styles of dance, having taken classes in ballet, tap, jazz, lyrical and hip hop. He had danced most of his life until his teacher retired, and found himself missing it.

After hearing the results, Milkalson was “ridiculously excited. I had invested a lot of time and effort into auditioning so I was extremely happy and relieved.”

Johansson has had a break from dance as well, but is excited to begin performing again.

“It’s something I’ve always wanted to be a part of,” she said.

Travis has also wanted to be a part of the team for awhile. Along with the others, she has had a lot of experience in a variety of genres.

“I felt united with everyone on the team and immediately closer to them,” she said. Travis looks forward to spending time with others who share the same passion.

Perez feels more energy with more additions to the team. “We are feeling newly charged,” she said.

She is also excited to work and experiment with more unique dance routines and different styles.

“We are all very excited about the possibilities,” Perez said.
