Many students look for jobs to make some spending money while in high school. However, because Davis is a small college town, Davis High students are forced to compete with adults and college students for the same jobs, which can be difficult.

Junior Tyler McGlothlin didn’t have as much trouble as some finding a job. McGlothlin works at Papa Murphy’s, and was hired over the summer. His co-workers are all around the same age as him, ranging from 15-19.

“Now that I’m getting older I feel the need for more responsibility, and I figured the best way to do that is to get a job that way it could teach me how to manage my time and prepare me for the real world. Also I could use the money,” McGlothlin said.

Many students utilize the Career Center to help them in their job search. Career Center Coordinator Julie Clayton helps students try to find a job that suits them.

“It is hard to get a job in this town because [students] are not only competing against other high school students, but college students and adults, and Davis isn’t that big so there is not many places that hire,” Clayton explained.

Another problem students face is that they many not be able to find the job they want, and instead have to settle for a different one.

“[Students] have to be willing to not take their first choice of job so that you have something for your next job,” Career Center helped Jay Brookman said. “If someone can recommend you personally for a job sometimes they’re more willing to give you a chance then off a piece of paper not knowing you.”
