The Davis High women’s field hockey team set a goal for itself: to win 5-0 in its league opener.

They did just that and more, dominating visiting Bella Vista 8-0 on Monday, Sept. 12 at home.

Even with this being their first league game, the Devils improved their record to an impressive 10-0. The team consists of 10 seniors, and that experience shows on the field.

Right off the whistle, junior Mia Skaggs tapped in a goal, after a pass from senior Sophia Sears. Two minutes later, Sears’ powerful shot again found the back of the net for Davis.

“We have a very large team, mostly made up of the seniors, and I feel they really carry the team well. They have really stepped up, taking leadership,” junior Leah Pinto said. Pinto also added to the score with a goal in the first half.

While controlling the attack, Davis also demonstrated their strong defensive line throughout the game. Senior Juliet Sanders, a center defender, provided support for her teammates, and used speed and stickwork to shut down any opposing attackers.

The midfield didn’t lack seniority either. Seniors Cara Satre, Nicole Pugh, Anna Reisenberg and captain Kailey Smith dominated in the center with speed and precise passing.

“We went into this game and tried a few new things and a few people in new positions,” Smith said.

Besides providing support, Satre had several shining moments herself, racking up three goals. Senior Darby Maguire also contributed, with a throw shot early in the game.

Maguire credits teamwork to the teams success.

“The first five goals were from five different people and it’s a really great feeling when everyone works together like that,” Maguire said.

With four minutes left in the game, Skaggs added another tally off of passes from Satre and Reisenberg.

“We have a busy game schedule this week and this win was a good way to start off a tough week of competition,” Smith said.

Despite this win, Davis has to focus on tough competition for the rest of the week. The team will travel to Chico on Wednesday, Sept. 14 and to San Jose over the weekend to play Mitty and St. Francis.
