Davis High students and their parents gathered in the Brunelle Performance Hall on Oct. 12 for information on financial aid for college. UC Davis financial aid officer Socorro Hernandez gave a presentation on the different resources and opportunities students have to help pay for their college education.

Senior Tait Strandgaard, who previously attended the UC Application workshop that was held on Sept. 28, had a few questions he hoped to find answers to at the event.

“I hope to learn more about scholarships and things like that,” Strandgaard said. “And just more about financial aid in general.”

Families received an information pack before entering the performance hall. The pack contains application checklists, FAQ and instructions, among other materials.

The presentation was introduced by Career Center coordinator Julie Clayton, who shared information about the Fund Your Future workbook and invited families to search for more resources at the DHS Career Center at any time.

Hernandez then continued with her presentation. She provided information about different ways to receive financial aid, which she defined in the presentation as “a range of resources available to help students and families meet the cost of education.”

Some highlights included explaining the differences between the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and the California Dream Act, important dates and deadlines and how to add more colleges to your list after submitting.

At the end of the event, Hernandez opened up for questions. Parents and students asked about eligibility, requirements, different options and general information.

Senior Daniel Ribeiro found the workshop very helpful and “would definitely recommend for people to attend next year.”

“I think it was organized well,” Ribeiro said. “I know there’s a bunch of information and that can be confusing, but it was made organized, and that’s really helpful.”
