After a few swim meets with little attendance, the Davis High varsity and frosh/soph swim teams had 64 competitors at the meet against Sheldon at the Arroyo Pool on March 21. Head coach John Varley was pleased to see so many swimmers show up.

“It’s always nice when we get most of the team [at a swim meet],” Varley said. “We usually get only 20 or 30 [swimmers].”

Since Sheldon does not have a frosh/soph team, Davis frosh/soph swimmers were competing against each other. Even so, Varley believes that the men need to “pay attention,” since many of them have been missing events.

Freshman Annika Bastin and sophomore Alex Harris think that this event was not their best, but they enjoyed the meet very much.

“It’s been really fun and lots of people came,” Bastin said. “It’s more fun now that I really know what I’m doing.”

“I enjoy high school swimming,” Harris said. “It wasn’t my best but I did try my best.”

Senior Ruiqian Sun came second in the men’s 500 freestyle race. Though he was happy with his result, he noted that he added 12 seconds to his original time.

“Davis has been doing really well,” Sun added. “We have a lot of good swimmers.”

Though there were some brief and light showers throughout the meet, it did not rain as much as it has at previous meets. Varley was happy for the team to compete under better weather conditions.

Varley was also pleased with the overall results of the swimmers, particularly the varsity women.

“They’ve been doing really well,” Varley said.
