One Davis police officer was shot and killed after responding to a three-car crash on 5th and D street just after 7 p.m. on Jan. 10, police said.

Police chief Darren Pytel said in media briefing at 11:50 p.m. that that a City of Davis police officer, Natalie Corona, sustained a gunshot injury was sent to the University of California at Davis medical center in Sacramento in “serious condition,” and later died.

At 1:29 a.m., Jan. 11, the suspect of the shooting was reported to be “found, deceased, inside a home near 5th and E St in Davis with what appears to be a self inflicted gunshot wound,” according to the Davis police department Twitter account. At an earlier news brief, public information officer Lt. Paul Doroshov said that the police department has a lead on a suspect, they cannot disclose any information as it is a “fluid tactical situation” and they do not want to provide information that may endanger any officers.

Doroshov advised people to stay indoors and not to come to central Davis, as the shooter was still active.

Davis Enterprise reporter Lauren Keene reported via Twitter that California Highway Patrol, the Vacaville Police Department, and Solano County sheriff cars responded to the incident.

A Solano county sheriff stationed at a roadblock on East 8th St. and Mesquite Dr. in Davis stated that numerous roadblocks had been put in place throughout the city, and all Davis citizens should stay inside, especially those closest to the downtown area. Streets into Downtown Davis were blocked, including Russell and Olive exits.

Twenty-five minutes after the incident, UCD released an alert describing the suspect as a white male in his twenties wearing a baseball hat, black jacket, jeans, and black tactical boots and urged students to stay away from downtown Davis.

The Davis Joint Unified School District posted a message to Facebook at 8:27 p.m. notifying the public that the District Office, Davis Senior High School, Davis School For Independent Study, North Davis Elementary School and Martin Luther King Jr. High School were closed for the night and that “all school personnel, students and visiting public have evacuated the sites and these buildings will be closed for the evening.”

Senior Jayce Tracanna was at Mishka’s Cafe on 2nd street with friends when the incident occured, and the restaurant was immediately put on lockdown. Once he could, Tracanna left downtown as soon as he heard what was going on.

“I’m like shaking a little bit but I think it will be ok,” Tracanna said.

Tracanna said he heard the gunshots but did not see anything.

“I honestly thought it was a car crash [because of] the fog,” Tracanna said. “I didn’t even know what was going on at all.”
