Online school has thrown a wrench in the plans of students transferring between Da Vinci and Davis High. Students who submitted their transfer applications for the 2020-2021 school year had to do so before knowing school would not be in person.

DHS senior Jack Wright transferred from Da Vinci this fall to start his senior year.

“I switched to DHS because I didn’t have many friends at Da Vinci and wanted to have a real high school experience,” Wright said. “I was really excited for the social aspect of going to in person school on campus this year.”

Unfortunately, the pandemic spoiled one of Wright’s main reasons for transferring, causing him to regret his decision.

“When [COVID] hit and school switched online, I was already enrolled at DHS and couldn’t switch back. I would rather be in online school at Da Vinci because it was already mostly online, so the transition was much easier than DHS,” Wright said.

On the other hand, Da Vinci student Abby Fisher is highly content with her decision to transfer from DHS, regardless of the situation at hand.

“I transferred schools because the learning environment and student body and staff were a better fit for me at Da Vinci,” Fisher said.

Like Wright, Fisher also noted the gap in technological use and proficiency before the pandemic. “I’m glad that I’m at Da Vinci for online school because teachers and students are more experienced with technology, and we already had a process to submit work online, so it was a much easier transition,” Fisher said.

DHS counselor Kimberley Liu stated that she, “had not seen an increase in transfers between the two schools, or an increased amount of discontent from students who did transfer between Da Vinci and DHS.” However, she did comment on the number of students who decided to attend school in other states which prioritized in person education.

“Many students, especially sophomores, left to go to states with different school situations than here. Many did admit that they were planning and hoping to come back to DHS when school was in person,” Liu said.
