Kiby Fuchslin never imagined she would be a teacher. Yet she has now been teaching for a total of 11 years.

Fuchslin was only a few credits away from getting her undergraduate degree in applied mathematics at UC Davis, when she found that one of the courses that would satisfy her requirements was interning in a classroom.

“I didn’t even consider being a teacher until I interned in a classroom, and I really enjoyed it. […] I just ended up going that route,” Fuchslin said.

Fuchslin was originally a computer science major focused on programming, but she switched career paths once she realized the kind of environment that sort of job entailed.

“[Computer science] was very isolating and it wasn’t something I wanted to be doing,” Fuchslin said.

Instead, she got her undergraduate in applied mathematics and her master’s in education.

Over her 11-year career she has held several teaching positions in the Central Valley area, including teaching at two Dixon schools, before recently taking a teaching position at Davis High.

She also balances her work life with raising two sons. “I wasn’t a teacher for a while. I was a stay-at-home mom, and working is so much easier,” Fuchslin said. Providing a good education for her children is part of her motivation for teaching.

“I like being in the community that my kids are growing up in. I’m excited that my kids will be going to the high school,” Fuchslin said.
