TikTok, a popular app which allows users to post up to one minute videos, has been a useful tool for Davis High students to find new and creative recipes.

Junior Peyton Schoen has picked up cooking in quarantine to be healthier and de-stress. Schoen was enticed by a viral recipe for cloud bread, a soft airy bread made with cornstarch, sugar and whipped egg whites.

“I disliked it because the bread was not as light and airy as promised,” Schoen said.

Despite the dissatisfying outcome, Schoen can’t wait to try something new.

“Tiktok has helped me fan the spark of my interest in cooking and baking. I can’t wait to see what new trend I should try next,” Schoen said.

Senior Skylar Schouten discovered a delicious chocolate chip cookie recipe.

“I found a very specific chocolate chip cookie recipe that made the best cookies I’ve ever tried. It is more or less a normal cookie recipe but has very specific instructions,” Schouten said.

The recipe differs because it calls for one egg and one egg yolk, and is chilled in the fridge for 20 minutes before being put in the oven.

“I loved the cookies but they do take a bit more work than I usually put into cookie recipes. It’s fun to try recipes I see on my TikTok for-you page,” Schouten said.

Senior Jordan Zuniga usually makes simple foods that can be cooked in 15 minutes or less. When she found a mock Taco Bell Crunchwrap recipe, she knew she had to give it a try.

The drive-through staple includes seasoned ground beef, nacho cheese, sour cream, lettuce and tomato wrapped in a large flour tortilla. Hidden inside is a corn tortilla that adds crunch.

“I liked how simple and easy the steps were to make it. My family tends to have mostly the same meals every week so TikTok has helped us change some things up,” Zuniga said.

Alex Wolford gave the “Gigi Hadid” inspired vodka pasta a try. The dish is a tomato cream sauce infused vodka, with parmesan and red chili flakes for spice.

“I really like the spice and the richness of the sauce. I think I would add some sort of protein or maybe basil just as sort of a garnish but I think the recipe itself was perfect as is,” Wolford said.

Although a great resource to find new foods, the app does come with some struggles when recreating other’s recipes.

“TikTok has given me a bunch of ideas and recipes, although sometimes it’s difficult to find exact measurements especially because a lot of creators forget to put those on their videos,” Wolford said.
