This month’s “Book of the Month,” recommended by senior Avital Schwarz, is about a band and their rise to fame in the 1970s.

Daisy Jones and The Six is a 2019 historical fiction novel written by Taylor Jenkins.

“My friend who works at a bookstore recommended it to me because she said the main character reminded her of me and she thought I would like it,” Schwarz said.

Daisy is a talented musician living recklessly in LA, partying on the Sunset Strip, and beginning her ascent to fame and stardom. When a producer pairs her up with a blues-rock band, “The Six,” their music takes off and the band becomes famous.

After reading the book, Schwarz learned lessons about the balance of responsibility and fun, as well as the importance of perseverance.

The story is told as a transcript of a MTV “Behind the Music” documentary series that profiles and interviews popular music groups and artists.

“This was one of my favorite books! It’s written in an interview style, so the narrator changes every few lines and it’s really fast-paced. It kept me super interested and made me want to keep reading. I think a lot of people can relate to the characters and the story is really exciting,” Schwarz said.

Schwarz thinks the novel is so well-written, the reader forget the band is fictional. Jenkins captures the energy of aspiring young people and both entertains and inspires.
