As the double-doors close behind me, I enter a new world filled with the sizzling aroma of meats, spices, all grilled together with fresh grains. I see the smoke fill the air as pots and pans are clanging in the background. Welcome to Plutos.

They fulfill their mission statement of providing "fresh food for a hungry universe."

Pluto’s is a small chain restaurant with 8 locations throughout northern California. One of them is located on 500 First Street in the Davis Commons.

This place features a variety of foods from salads to sandwiches to side dishes.

Plutos arranges their foods into 3 categories: Greens & Things, Meats & Poultry and Veggies & Spuds.

The Pluto’s website describes their salads as “tossed to your liking by our salad chef.” The customer gets the opportunity to choose every detail of their salads, from the lettuce to the dressing to all of the fresh toppings available.

Senior Rebecca Seraphin enjoys the variety in the salads at Pluto’s. “It’s cool how you can choose up to 7 ingredients to add, and how the choice includes the normal salad stuff and fruit,” Seraphin said. She also enjoys the fact that she can top off her salad with some cheap tri-tip.

Meats & Poultry is not the most impressive category. Their sandwiches are decent, however, I would appreciate more of a variety, as well as clarity on the menu.

Their carved meat is decent, however I feel that it is burnt and nowhere near juicy.

The final category, Veggies & Spuds, contains my favorite item on the menu, “Saturn’s Garlic Potato Rings”. Described as “better than fries” by the company, these rings have been fried to perfection and tossed with garlic, giving each ring perfect coverage. Other delicious sides include soup, onion rings, stuffing and spuds.

If one is in the mood for a quiet atmosphere for a date, or for just self reflecting time, Plutos is not the ideal location. The restaurant does not have the best environment for eating in. Inside, Pluto’s is usually noisy and crowded. Pluto’s is better for someone in the mood for fresh fast food.

The service is not that phenomenal either. Since it is noisy, it is difficult to give your order.

The employees are also very rushed. They talk at the speed of light when giving their order and don’t give those sincere ‘thank you’ comments you would receive at a more high end restaurants.

Overall, Pluto’s is a good, discounted dining experience. They fulfill their mission statement of providing “fresh food for a hungry universe.”
