For Paris Hilton, the struggle to remain in the spotlight is something that must be won at all costs. Neither multiple DuI's, nor sex tapes, nor jail time seem to deter her from the pursuit of fame.
And now (OMG!) she's back to reality Tv, this time toting an entourage of Paris wannabees all equally desperate for their fifteen minutes of fame.
"Paris hilton: My New BFF" is MTv's latest show, created by Scott Thomas and Jed Elinoff.
In this "reality" TV program, 18 contestants, 16 girls and two guys vie fro Paris's good graces as each attempt to show that he or she will be a better sidekick --er--best friend.
The competition functions similar to "The Bachelor" and "Flavor of Love", but lacks both their entertainment value and creativity.
Piled into a house fit for Barbie are plenty of trailer trash blondes, a sexually ambiguous asian chick/dude, the token gay guy, and an outspokenly mean African-American tough girl.
The show kicks off with a welcome party for the contestants.
As Paris walks in, there ensues a first day of school moment somehat akin to "Mean Girls" where all the wannabees buzz around there queen bee.
A lucky few contestants on-the-ball emough to shower Hilton with some saccharine words of sheer admiration while the rest sit star struck on the sidelines. As hilton exits the party she offers a word of advice: "never be the last to leave a party. Thats for Debbies. Debbies equal desperate."
Even Marie Antoinette couldn't have said it better.
"If you guys are gonna hang with me your gonna need a big-time makeover,"Hilton declares. This comes as she treats each contestant to a full-time makeover in order to prepare them for the fast passed worl of red carpets and exclusive nightclubs.
Who said superficiality can't be well intentioned and sweet?
As only one hopeful will be bestowed with the honor of Paris's new BFF, emotional elimination ceremonies culminate every episode. This time, a beach blonde who had the audacity to refuse Hilton's suggestions to dye her hair jet black was cut with a businesslike "TTYN". (That is, "Talk To You Never").
The logic behind Hilton's decision is clear: "Best friends should trust each other's opinion."
Here's my opinion: if at any point in life a viewer feels compelled to feel the brain cells being sucked out of their head, do not hesitate to tune in to MTV Tuesdays at 10pm. Otherwise, like,seriously...there are far better ways to spend an hour of your life.
