The DHS varsity men’s soccer team started off strong in Monday’s game against the Franklin High School Wildcats, scoring the first and only goal of the game within the first 20 minutes. Left forward Kyle West scored the goal, smoothly assisted by a lofting pass from teammate Luke Palmer.
“They came out with fire,” fellow teammate Greg Carter said.
This was the second match-up between Davis and Franklin. Earlier this month, the Wildcats beat the Devils 2-0 in an upset. ‘We came in wanting to win more than they did, and we succeeded,” teammate Chris Rubald said.
There were a few nice attempts by the Devils before the score, including a shot by Andisheh Bagheri that curved just wide of the right goal post. “The first 20 minutes were very effective,” DHS assistant coach David Robertson said.
The Wildcats had trouble putting the ball on the DHS net but did take many good shots. A shot by senior Zachary Azevedo sent DHS goalie Patrick Roughton down hard. Later in the game Franklin came close to scoring when Devils’ goalie Kevin Monell, who subbed in for Roughton, tripped up a Franklin player with his hands in the goal box, causing a penalty kick.
“The penalty kick was a fray,” Robertson said. Luckily Monell was able to stop the shot by junior Nnaemeka Ofodire, keeping the score 1-0.
