Devils Test the Waters and Come Out Ahead

The DHS varsity men’s water polo team defeated Jesuit yesterday, 11-6. The five point lead was achieved from the four goals made by Max Reilly, three by Augusto Leal, along with Trevor Allen, and Theodore Nicholson. The anticipated game between the two rival teams crowded Arroyo Pool with a total of 200 fans.
Davis gained first possession during the game, kicking it off with Trevor Allen's back hand score just minutes into the first quarter. Jesuit came back fast scoring next. Execution became an issue for Davis when two penalty shots were missed; leaving Davis behind 1-2 in the first quarter.
Despite the discouraging start, Davis put on the heat with their finesse and passing, along with over six saves from keeper Kody Moynihan. Fans hadn't seen anything yet.
Minutes later the ball traveled from Reilly to Michael Wright who sent it to Leal as he scored from the left corner. Next, Jesuit put up a fight as Reilly sprinted down the field unguarded, shot and scored - extending the lead 6-3.
Jesuit began to chisel down Davis' defense by maneuvering the ball across the net, causing Allen to attempt a block but scoring a goal against Davis. Coach Tracy Stapleton called for a timeout.
Play resumed, with Davis reapplying the pressure. Allen stole the ball, maneuvered past Jesuit's defense and delayed his shot just enough to provide a bullet over the keeper's head -providing a secure 8-4 lead.
The remainder of the game was spent running down the clock while maintaining possession. But of course that didn't stop the defense from shutting down Jesuit, and placing the ball in the hands of the offense where scoring was unstoppable. The product: an 11-6 triumph.
Currently, Stapleton's only concern for the team is to get to sectionals. For him this game was no different than any other game, but instead progress. "It's like the battle of a war. We're trying to win the war, so we don't care about the battles," said Stapleton, "Right now we're just staying in the realm of our game, and focusing on getting to sections."
