DHS swept the Sac-Joaquin Sub Section meet on Nov 8. All seven parts of cross country teams move on to section championships, including varsity, JV, sophomore, freshman, and Frosh/Soph men and women. The meet was packed with both division one and division two schools.

Coach Bill Gregg and assistant coach Francisco Cornejo wanted to focus on next weeks section championships, and possibly the state championship. “The varsity boys, also on cruise control, finished 60 points ahead of the second place team” said Gregg. Cross country is scored based on a team’s top six runners. Each runner’s place in the race is added together and the team with the least amount of points wins.

Due to recent injuries of other varsity athletes, the varsity team has changed their lineup from previous races. The team now includes sophomore Trevor Halsted, senior Matt Petersen, senior Drew Petersen, junior Dillon Shaw, junior Grayson Hough, and junior Bob Riestenberg.

Although no DHS varsity athletes placed first in the race individually, the varsity team had six of their eligible scoring runners in the top 25 places.

On the individual level, it was a great race for sophomore Trevor Halsted. Halsted placed first for the varsity boys with a time of 16:21 for 3 miles. Halsted has been training, daily for the cross country season. And on most days after a vigorous practice, Halsted swims. His race went well. “I felt very relaxed and in control,” Halsted said after his race. According to assistant coach Francisco Cornejo, the varsity team tried just enough to secure their position in section championships, but not their personal record. “It was good, I saw a lot of confidence… hopefully they will be ready for the next race” said Cornejo. Cornejo wanted the team to run together, looking for an easy win.

“We just had most of the team packing up,” junior Grayson Hough said. This strategy allows for easier running, but still ensures victory as a whole, according to Hough. After the scores were tallied, Davis won the men’s varsity, with a low score of 56.

“This is the third consecutive year DHS has advanced all seven of its teams,” coach Bill Gregg said.
