The DHS varsity soccer team obliterated the Monterey Mustangs on Oct. 21, where the Devils dominated the majority of the game.

Jumpstarting the game, Monterey players Davis Smith and Marlin Brown passed the ball back to the team’s defenders, where the ball remained.

However, DHS player Cyrus Ghaffari successfully pulled off an impressive 34 shots on the Mustang’s goal, making for a 7-0 Devil smack-down. This raised the Devil record to 17-3-2. “It was really a team effort,”Ghaffari said.

However, one of Ghaffari’s goals was particularly impressive. He dribbled and danced his way past four Monterey players until, “[he] saw the opportunity, and […] took it.”

“I got the ball on the right side of the box and I was completely covered so I just started running across the box in front of the goal to try to free up my left foot for a shot,” Ghaffari said.

“Cyrus has been in a bit of a dry-spell,” DHS varsity coach Ashley Yudin said.

Yudin jokingly blames this dry-spell on the Davis Enterprise.

“[The Enterprise] put it out in the paper that [Ghaffari] had scored 99 points. That just froze him up and he couldn’t score his 100th.”

But that all changed for Ghaffari last night with his two goals and countless shots and assists.

On the other end of the field, Devil’s senior defender  Jesus “Chuy” Herrera held the defense together. Fortunately for the Devil’s defense, the ball rarely left the Mustang’s side of the field. The Mustang’s only had three shots on goal.

“[The Mustang’s] tried to come out and play more conservative,” Yudin said. “Once we got up by a couple points, they realized if they were gonna beat us they had to really come out and play and be aggressive.”

According to Yudin, that’s when the Mustangs “sealed their own fate.”

“We don’t play as well when the other team has nine players behind the ball. Once they start trying to attack, we really take control. We have more trouble against conservative teams than aggressive ones,” Yudin said.

“For next week we really have to prepare,” Yudin said. “We have to get past Elk Grove so that we can focus on Franklin. Whoever wins that game, is the league champion.”
