It’s a cool autumn sunset filled with the whirr of bugs when the women’s varsity water polo celebrates its 12-7 win over long-time rivals St. Francis on Oct. 17.  The blue and white crowd is still pumped up from the Davis High men’s varsity team’s victory over the Jesuits.

Goalie Alicia Demaree had a particularly outstanding game, blocking shot after shot by St. Francis players. Demaree was sharp, deflecting cross court bullets and fending off her opponent’s mere inches away from the goal.

In the minutes leading up to the end of game, Coach Doug Wright pointed at Demaree, who was preparing for a penalty shot, calling out, “This is a gift for you, goalie.” Although St. Francis scored a point on the penalty shot, Wright still smiled and congratulated Demaree.

“Alicia is fabulous. She may not be the biggest goalie or the best passer but she plays with great heart,” Wright said.

Davis High also had impressive performances from Heather Johnson, Colby Stapleton and Mara Dominguez. All three players contributed multiple goals to the winning score.

Wright hopes that the positive momentum of the game will carry over to the team’s next match. He thinks that the win will help the team to play well in the last league game of the season, and believes that the team will be placed as the number 1 seat in the post seed playoffs.
