It’s not common to see diapers, pull-ups, baby wipes, and baby formula at Halden Field, but at the last football game of the season on Nov. 2, Halden Field was filled with both fans and diapers.

For its annual fundraiser, the Davis High football program gathered donations of diapers, pull-ups,  and baby wipes at their game against Elk Grove in hopes of helping those in need at the St. John’s Shelter Program for Women and Children.

The St. John’s Shelter Program aims to assist women and children who have been the victims of abuse, have been marginalized by society, or come from disadvantaged backgrounds.

According to senior varsity player, Adam King, the fundraiser went fairly well.

“Any money or items we received is helping someone, even if it’s in a small way,” King said.

In addition to this fundraiser, the football team sported pink attire along with their blue uniforms at Homecoming in support of breast cancer, and the team was successful in raising money for the Susan G. Komen breast cancer foundation.

More locally, the varsity football team also made an effort to support one of their teammates off the field by raising money and support for the Walk for Autism in Sacramento earlier this year.

According to King, Coach Steve Smyte “emphasizes making sure that [all of the players] are good students, sons, and committed members, and he really follows through with that.”

Smyte’s commitment shows through the football program’s selfless efforts to give back to the high school and local community.

“I think it’s important for the football team to take part in fundraisers and events like these because football is about more than just being a good football player,” King said.
