Ethnic distribution of GATE students shows underrepresentation of Hispanics

A legal suit was filed against the Davis School District Gifted and Talented Education (GATE) program accusing it of discriminatory practices. The suit centered on whether the admissions practices of the GATE program favored tests that were ethnically biased.

The test that the claim said was valued the most has a bias against students who learned English as a second language or who were new to the language.

Looking at the ethnic makeup of GATE compared to the district overall, GATE underrepresents Hispanics and over-represents Asians.

Note: BlueDevilHUB.com chose not to look at all ethnic groups because some groups represent too small of a proportion of the district for a comparison to be informative. The percentages shown above are the percentages of these ethnic groups among those students who marked White, Hispanic, Black or Asian as their race/ethnicity.
