Although Davis High offers many advanced AP and honor classes, many students choose not to partake in these extra challenging courses.

While most AP and honor classes do add a boost to a student’s GPA, they are certainly more rigorous classes that can require a lot of work. For some students, this fear of being overloaded with homework is enough to keep them for choosing AP or Honor classes.

“I was looking for a smooth transition from junior high to high school, so I didn’t want to take any classes that would be really hard,” sophomore Jake Griffiths said.

Sophomore Miles Wong said his decision to not take AP or honor classes was swayed by upper classmen who he had talked to before choosing his schedule.

“I had talked with some juniors and seniors, and a lot of them said that their AP classes took a lot more effort than they expected,” Wong said.

While it may be a popular belief that you have to take AP and honors classes to get into college, DHS counselor Mary Hallisey is quick to say that’s not the case.

“ I think that that’s a real myth out there that you’re not going to be able to go to college unless you take all honors or AP classes because there really is a college for everybody out there […] It’s not a deal breaker,” Hallisey said.

When asked about whether or not they regretted their decision, both Wong and Griffiths say they are happy with their classes the way they are.

“I have a lot of friends that are taking really hard classes and they always have a lot of homework,” Wong said. “ So I’m glad I chose a lighter workload for my first year.”
