Parents filled the seats and lined the back walls of the IPAB for ninth grade parent night, an informational session for parents of incoming sophomores held on Feb. 6. The presentation began at 7 p.m. with a video introducing classes at Davis High made by students in the Video and Film class and ended at 8 p.m. with a round of questions and answers.

Head counselor Courtenay Tessler began the night by advising parents on ways to provide support for their students during the transition into high school.

“Take a few moments and think of your own high school experience […] it’s their life, and it’s not going to be easy,” Tessler said.

Parents were given the night’s agenda, course catalogs and a copy of The HUB school newspaper upon entering the IPAB.

Topics covered in the presentation included the course selection process, high school graduation requirements, planning for a balanced course load, the AP/Honors policy and online courses. The presentation was also available in Spanish with counselor Linda Preciado in P-11.

Other speakers included Principal Will Brown, second vice president of PTA Jennifer Creinin, ASB President Rami Rashmawi and Da Vinci counselor Cara Leppington.

Parents like Sandy Baca who are putting their first students through high school felt that the presentation addressed many of their concerns and questions.

“I think it was perfect. I feel confident sending [my daughter] in. What I really enjoyed was that [the counselors] talked a lot about making the students comfortable with the changes that they are going through,” Baca said.

The counselors will head over to the junior highs to give presentations starting Feb. 24. Parents can tour classrooms and learn more about classes at Open House, which is scheduled for Feb. 27, an earlier date than previous years.

Incoming sophomores are expected to select and submit courses through the portal, open March 8-18, and in physical copy March 19-21 when the counselors revisit the junior highs.

The Powerpoint and course catalog are available online through the DSHS website.
