With the Davis High women’s lacrosse season not until spring, preseason training and the incorporation of ‘Winter Games’ can be fun ways to get back into shape for many of the returning players.

According to sophomore Marissa Wong, preseason began with ‘boot camp,’ which is an optional workout where the athletes work on core, push-ups and weights. Then there’s team conditioning which is a lot of sprinting.

Boot camp gets the athletes into shape, and the Winter Games are a chance for them to keep up their skills.

For the games everyone is assigned a country and “it’s really fun when everyone gets into it,” junior Julia Zabala said. She and Wong are part of team Australia.

Winter Games consists of games every week where all the teams end up playing each other. Each week there is a spirit assignment the teams must complete that is related to their country.

“About two weeks ago we had to put together uniforms; the week after that we had to find some fun facts, and this week we have to incorporate our flag,” sophomore Esther Wang said.

Wang finds benefits of the games in the social aspect as well as the skill work.

“It just gets you really pumped for lacrosse season so that when the season comes you are not really rusty […] it’s also just a fun way to have fun with you friends,” Wang said.

Junior Sarah Sherwin agrees that it is helpful to prepare for the spring so they do not have to worry about basic skills.

“We can kinda just build on that because we’ve already learned and practiced that during preseason,” Sherwin said.

The whole team does not participate, but for those who want the extra practice enjoy this opportunity.

“Practices aren’t mandatory but those aiming for varsity usually attend,” Zabala said. Anyone is welcome to practice.

“It’s for everyone. Everyone learns something from doing these games. It doesn’t have to be ‘I’m going to try out for varsity’ or ‘i’m going to make varsity’, you can learn something from whatever you want to take out of it,” Sherwin said.

The last winter game is on Dec. 19, where a winner of the games will be decided.

Lacrosse season begins mid-February.
