The Davis High Key Club volunteered at the Davis Community Meals organization on Jan. 3 by cooking and serving lunch to seniors and the homeless as part of their winter volunteer group project. Nearly 40 Key Club members showed up to the St. Martin’s Episcopal Church to participate in the project.

Some members chopped vegetables for dishes that adult community members used for cooking, some made fruit salad and others washed dishes and served food in the dining area.

Key Club Project Coordinator junior Helene Levy sorted fruit for seniors and the homeless to pick up.

“We encouraged the whole club to volunteer at this event because we wanted a group activity for the holidays,” Levy said.

Key Club members volunteer at many events to achieve their five required Key Club hours, but usually only a few members attend events at a time.  The goal for the Jan. 3 Community Meals project was to complete a volunteer project as an entire club.

Junior club members Myah Martinez, Jodie Stroeve and Jasmin Hoang have all volunteered for past projects like basketball games,  public library events, tree planting and the play My Fair Lady. The group of friends decided to join Key Club at Davis Community Meals because they believed it was important to participate in group projects in order to bring the club closer together.

“Volunteering is, of course, mainly about helping the people you’re working for in a really positive way,” Hoang said. “But it’s also just really fun to talk to other people while you’re working.”

Levy agrees; she joined Key Club because it’s a much more social and tight-knit club than other volunteering clubs like National Honor Society or California Scholarship Federation.

Volunteer coordinator Huei Young is a volunteer coordinator and cook at Davis Community Meals.  She used to be a cook for UC Davis and has delivered food three times a week to the non-profit for 18 years.

Young’s favorite volunteering moment was when she cooked for fundraisers at the UC Davis International House and helped to raise $17,000 for the poor.

As a lifelong volunteer cook for the homeless, Young says she is pleased to see so many young volunteers coming to Community Meals to do their part.

“It is so great that these children are starting to think of others and sacrifice their time and energy for less fortunate people so early in their lives,” Young said. “I hope that lasts the rest of their lives.”
