The Davis High women’s varsity badminton team swept their game against Will C. Wood without losing a single match, finishing with a score of 15-0 on March 16.

The victory was a testament to the strength of the badminton program under the new head coach Ty Brown, who came in right before the beginning of the season to fill a vacant coaching position. Brown had never coached badminton before, yet he stepped into the role in order to help out the team that needed a coach.

Sophomore Anna Gao is very appreciative of all that Brown has done for the team. She says that the whole team has been learning together, and that they have been playing well together even though it is near the beginning of the season.

“We lost to Rodriguez 8-7 earlier, but they’re ranked number two, and usually we wouldn’t expect to play so closely to them so early in the season. We’re really looking forward to see how far and well we can play this year.”

Senior and captain Linda Li says that she thinks that in the day’s game “my team and I played extremely well because traditionally Wood has been just about comparable to Davis, and today they didn’t win a single game.”

Gao added that, “today was definitely a great day for our team. We played hard, as did the other team, but I’’m happy that all of our hard work is showing and paying off, and that we’re one step closer to winning the entire league”

Li is proud of her team for the day’s victory, and she says that powerhouses Rodriguez and Armijo are “the only schools in our league that are any real competition.”

Li looks forward to the rest of the season, and says that team’s goal is to beat both Rodriguez and Armijo, as well as to take first overall in the league.
