The Davis High women’s varsity soccer team closed out Delta League play and clinched the league title on Wednesday, April 29 with a stunning 11-0 victory over visiting Monterey Trail on senior night.

The Devils honored their nine seniors with a pregame ceremony, and then the carnage on the field began. By the incredibly high standards that the Blue Devils set for themselves (97 goals for, 8 goals against), they took a while to get going.

After setting the tone for the match by hardly allowing Monterey Trail a touch for the first twenty minutes, senior Brooke Rosenblum made a run down the right sideline before hitting a banger from a tight angle off of the crossbar and into the back of the net.

Once the scoring began, the floodgates were set wide open for the locals. Sophomore Julia Curtis went on a long run down the sideline before putting ball through for senior Annie Leck, who finished off the play with a good shot. Freshman Brooke Rubenstein finished a nice shot to make it 4-0.

Making a run through the box, Rosenblum was fouled hard as she was about to go through on net. Senior keeper Chris Roeckl-Navazio ran up and buried the penalty kick for her first-ever varsity goal.

Rosenblum then got her revenge with a beautiful goal to make the score 7-0. Senior Hannah Thompson and freshman Ava McCray also got on the board for the Lady Blue Devils, and freshman Mia Villegas put away two well-placed shots to run the tally up to 11.

Junior Morgan Metler contributed well on offense in the second half, and junior Gabe Herrera and senior Kasey Carlson played strong defense throughout.

Head Coach Sara Stone felt comfortable with her team entering the playoffs and was happy with the performance.

“We have a lot of strengths and they were seen today, including depth,” she said. “We still need to work on some parts, like keeping the ball moving and attacking and defending as a team.”

DHS plays next Tuesday against a team that is yet to be determined for its first playoff game.
