Davis High students eager to take advantage of off-campus lunches or free afternoons will soon have two new restaurants to try: Hot Italian and Zuma Poke & Lush Ice will both be opening in Davis this fall.

Hot Italian will open in the Davis Commons, replacing grilled cheese spot The Melt. At Hot Italian, customers can look forward to eating pizza, paninis and gelato. The restaurant’s goal is to bring people together by incorporating Italy’s new generation of art, music, design, sports, foods and wines into the restaurant’s culture.

“I am always happy to welcome some good pizza in [Davis], and I have always liked Italian food. I think [the culture] will add a fun little ambiance to the place and give it a certain little personality,” senior Garrison Koeberer said.

Junior Greg Silver has high hopes for the new eatery.

“I think [Hot Italian] is going to knock all the other pizza places out in Davis,” Silver said.

Zuma Poke & Lush Ice will serve Hawaiian cuisine, and is located on 3rd Street next to Temple Coffee.

There, customers will be able to get a taste of summer by eating Hawaiian-style shaved ice. Another menu item will be poke bowls, salads typically made of raw fish, seaweed, rice and a variety of spices.

Some DHS students are excited for the chance to try new foods, including junior Cameron Wright.

“I usually like trying new things, so the poke bowl sounds good,” Wright said.

With these restaurants opening in late fall, DHS students will be able to look forward to something besides pumpkin spice lattes.

“I love when new restaurants come to Davis because it gives students like me new places to go eat at during lunch besides Chipotle and In-N-Out. Plus, I love Hawaiian food and pizza,” junior Delaney Davis said.
