Junior Tessa Malone rips the ball from an opposing Pleasant Grove player and dishes it off to sophomore Kelsey Forrester, who draws a foul from a defender.  Forrester steps up to the line and knocks down two free throws.

Despite the strong efforts like Forrester’s, the Davis High women’s basketball team (7-10, 2-3) came up short to Pleasant Grove 58-51 at home on Tuesday, Jan. 19.

Davis fought an uphill battle the whole game, with Pleasant Grove senior Brittany Nguyen hitting four three-pointers in the first half. At halftime, the score was 31-19 Pleasant Grove.

“[At halftime] we talked about stopping [Nguyen], recognizing where she is and winning the hustle plays and pushing the ball,” head coach Heather Highshoe said.

The Lady Devils came out of halftime on fire, hitting multiple three-pointers to close the gap to 36-31.

However, the team could not quite catch Pleasant Grove; the loss dropped Devils behind the Eagles in the Delta League standings.

“This game] hurts us; we were both two-and-two coming into this [game] so [Friday against Grant] will be a game that will matter for playoff seedings. I told them that Friday is a very big game for us and we need to take care of that,” Highshoe said.

“I think we need to start with more energy and play consistently throughout the game,” said junior Cara Satre, who tallied eight points. “We won’t play perfect for a whole game but we can try and limit our mistakes.”
