Dec. 15 marked the beginning of the Les Curry basketball tournament hosted by Davis High. The Blue Devils opened strong by winning their first game of the three-day tournament, scoring 88 points to Ukiah High School’s 64.

The game opened with numerous 3 point baskets from junior Reed Hessl and senior Tyler Mundy. Hessl was able to rack up nine points in the first quarter alone. Senior Ryan Strong also made an impressive dunk. By the end of the first quarter, the Blue Devils were up 27-16.

Hessl continued to make multiple flawless three pointers to keep Davis in the lead in the second quarter 50-32.

Sophomore Arcel Rusanganwa hustled hard throughout the entire game, teaming up with junior Gavin Schouten to execute a tricky play to make the shot against Ukiah. The Blue Devils stayed up throughout the third quarter with their lead of 66-48.

In the fourth, junior Kai Taylor blocked an attempted dunk from Ukiah. Seniors Greg Silver and Ben Bergevin tag team and made multiple successful plays and even more successful baskets. Davis came out victorious, with a final score of 88-64.

Hessl, with an impressive 26 point game, credited their coach Daniel Gonzalez for the team’s success.

“Coach G does a good job pushing us in practice so the game slows down in pressure situations. We just have to keep making the little plays and hustle all game long,” Hessl said.
