Three Davis High students are part of a nationwide team of 10 high school students who put together a society and culture website that went live last week. The idea for the website, Balter Monthly, was originated by DHS senior Maev Dunning.

Dunning thought of creating the website after she went to a writing program in New York over the summer.

“We wanted to find a way to use what we had learned at [the program] and make something cool with it,” Dunning said. “I wanted to have a kind of creative outlet and way to put all of our ideas out there in a creative way that would be able to be reached by lots of people.”

Dunning put a message on her Instagram, inviting anyone who was interested in participating in the site to contact her. Nine students reached out to her; some from DHS and some from the program.

Senior Scout Dubach and sophomore Enid Frank are the two other DHS students who contribute to Balter Monthly.

“I’ve always wanted to have a blog but I’ve always been really scared to do it by myself, so when Maev posted this I [direct messaged] her and said ‘oh this is so cute!’ and she asked me if I want to do it and I said ‘yes,’” Dubach said.

The website’s main goal is to get different perspectives on issues from all over the U.S.

“We’re going to have a few pieces every month that are about […] a teenager’s take on current events and pieces related to pop culture and we’re also going to have art pieces with photography and poetry in addition to the news,” Dunning said.

Since Dunning is the main editor of the website, she is in charge of editing all the pieces, putting everything together on the site and making sure every contributor is meeting their deadline.

Meanwhile, Frank contributes original art and Dubach contributes photography and mood boards to the site.
