Davis High was filled with red, white, blue and all things Hawaiian as students dressed up for the first two spirit days to kick off Homecoming week.

The first spirit day of the week was American Pie Monday, which brought patriotic colors galore.

There was spirit everywhere you looked. Sophomore Ada Freese wore a red shirt with white shorts and a red, white and blue fanny pack.

“I dressed up because we only have three years of high school here in Davis and we really need to make the most of it,” Freese said.

Other students also dressed up in red, white and blue. “I think it’s really fun to show spirit to the whole school and I think if everyone does it, it looks really cool and it’s cool to see how everything comes together with you and your friends,” sophomore Brooke Valenzuela said.

Even teachers were getting into it. “It’s out of the ordinary, and why wouldn’t you dress up?” history teacher Fern O’Brien said. O’Brien was wearing an American flag scarf.

Although a lot of people did dress up, others didn’t. “I didn’t have an outfit that correlated with the colors,” sophomore Kripalee Niraula said.

Following a patriotic Monday, students showcased two different sides of their style on Teen Beach Tuesday, inspired by the “Teen Beach Movie.” Students chose to either dress up as surfers or bikers, which made participation easier for those who didn’t have clothes to fit just one theme.

The “Teen Beach Movie” tells the story of Brady and Mack, who wash up on the real-life set of their favorite film. Although it may seems like a cheesy movie to some, math teacher Michelle Higuera still participated because “it’s fun,” she said.

Though many stated “I forgot,” or “I had nothing to wear,” sophomores Rachel Wong and Esther San said, others simply have negative opinions.

“I don’t even remember seeing the movie,” junior Dani Grenier said. “But dressing up is fun.”

“Once you get out of high school, you don’t get many more chances to dress up,” sophomore Sofia Pereria said.

Spirit week isn’t just dressing up, it’s about showing unity and “DHS pride,” as sophomore Mara Bledsoe said.
