Many people enjoy Valentine’s Day by spending time with their significant other or close friends (often referred to as “Galentine’s Day”). More often then not, the holiday typically includes many sweet treats, a romantic dinner and a movie to end the night.

According to Fandango, a popular movie ticketing company, “romantic movies can make you laugh out loud, cry your eyes out or squeeze with delight when boy finally gets girl (or vice versa). One way or another, they give you all the warm and fuzzies just in time for Valentine’s Day.”

Finding the perfect Valentine’s Day movie can be quite difficult. The ideal movie needs to, above all, be romantic. Whether this is a heartfelt love story or just a friendly relationship between besties, it’s up to you. Secondly, there must be a comedic aspect to the film– something that makes you laugh your head off every time you watch it. Lastly, the perfect Valentine’s Day movie needs to have some classic drama and conflict that keeps you on the edge of your seat.

After reviewing the most popular Valentine’s Day films, I have settled on the top four best Valentine’s Day movies.

Coming in at fourth place is “To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before.” After its release in Aug. 2018, the Netflix original blew up overnight, scoring 97 percent on Rotten Tomatoes. “To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before” tells the story of Lara Jean, a teenage girl, and her secret love letters, which, after being released, lead to absolute chaos.

While this film is very upbeat, it does appear a little corny and predictable. If it had more suspense, I would be more inclined to watch it and it would be higher on my list of the best Valentine’s Day movies.

In third place is the nostalgic film that tied the 1980s to the early 2000s, “13 Going on 30.” After total humiliation at her 13th birthday party, Jenna Rink wants to disappear until she’s 30. With the help of a few specks of wishing dust, Jenna’s wish comes true. Jenna takes us along on a rollercoaster journey, which brings us all the way back to her childhood best friend, Matt, a boy that she thought destroyed her party.

Personally, I thoroughly enjoyed this movie although it appears more like an everyday movie then a Valentine’s Day film. If it included more romance, it would definitely place higher on my list.

Taking second place is “How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days,” a hilarious romantic comedy from 2003. In the movie, Benjamin Barry, an advertising executive and self-proclaimed ladies’ man, bets that he can make a woman fall in love with him in just 10 days.

Andie Anderson, who covers the “How To” beat for a popular magazine, is coincidentally assigned to write an article on “How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days.” The two coincidentally meet in a bar and begin their hysterical love story.

However, the title of best Valentine’s Day movie goes to “Sixteen Candles,” a classic film from 1984.

Samantha’s life is going downhill fast when, in the heat of her sister’s wedding, her family forgets her 16th birthday. The 16-year-old has a huge crush on the most popular boy in school, while the nerdiest one has a crush on her. All of this, along with her dreadfully embarrassing grandparents and their foreign exchange student, create a hilarious and romantic story that is perfect for Valentine’s Day.

While the perfect Valentine’s Day movie can be hard to find, as long as it is romantic, funny and dramatic, it is sure to be the perfect film to end the night.
