Yolo County has rolled out its Roadmap to Recovery plan, outlining the stages for the community’s recovery from the coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak.

The plan includes four stages: released items, lower risk items, higher risk items and end of order items. The county is in stage one, which includes released items like essential businesses, golf courses, drive-in religious services and curbside pick-up.

Schools and child care fall into stage two; however, there is currently no plan in Yolo Roadmap to Recovery for the reopening of schools.

“The Yolo County Office of Education has held conversations with Yolo County Public Health about creating a plan for reopening schools but no additional information is available at this time,” Yolo County Superintendent of Schools Garth Lewis said.

There is not yet a plan for how students in high- risk groups relative to coronavirus (COVID- 19) will be able to make a return to classrooms. According to Lewis, “these precautions will be addressed in any plans to physically reopen schools.”

In recent weeks, Governor Newsom has talked of reopening schools in mid to late July. Yolo County schools will remain closed through the end of scheduled summer sessions.

“Each school district will follow their summer instructional calendars utilizing distance learning as their primary mode of instruction. At this time, we are waiting for guidance from the state and other health agencies regarding specific practices,” Lewis said.

The Yolo County Office of Education and Yolo County’s Roadmap to Recovery plan are still uncertain on a timetable for moving through the stages but will continue to follow the guidance of public health professionals when deciding when low- risk items will reopen.

“Each school district is considering a number of possible scenarios under which schools could reopen– including a continuation of distance learning until conditions are safe for the physical reopening of schools,” Lewis said.
